A study of the development of pre- and early Romantic texts in 18th century Germany with a focus on relevant works by Sophie von la Roche, Goethe, and Wackenroder.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

An understanding of the development of writing in 18th century Germany from the Age of Sensibility to Romanticism; knowledge and understanding of key texts by major figures of the period; recognition a Cult of Feeling which spans most of the 18th century; to foster an understanding of the literary text as a source for the study of cultural and intellectual history.

Assessment Information

Course exam (2500 words) 50%, degree exam (1.5 hours) 50%.
