Early Medieval England and its Neighbours: Celts, Vikings, Normans and the Development of an English 'State' C.400-1100 (HI0007)

The course is intended to meet the general objectives of History's Honours courses. It also has the following specific aims:

1) To impart a knowledge of the political, economic and cultural development of England from the Anglo-Saxon settlement to the establishment of the Anglo-Norman state, with emphasis on relations with neighbouring peoples in the British Isles and on the continent.

2) To familiarise students with recent historiographical approaches to relations between the peoples of the British Isles.

3) To examine the emergence of various forms of identity and allegiance in the British Isles and a sense of English 'national consciousness'.

4) To acquaint students with some of the important sources for early medieval Britain and to develop skills in the analytical use of evidence.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in any first level historical course and any second level historical course or equivalent. Before enrolling students on this course, Directors are asked to contact the History Honours Admissions Secretary to ensure that a place is available (tel. 503783).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course aims to impart general skills in historical analyses and transferable skills, such as articulate oral presentation, ability to present written work clearly and well, time management, and the collection, organisation and analysis of complex material.

Assessment Information

One essay of about 3000 words (one third of overall assessment); one two-hour examination paper (two-thirds of overall assessment).
