America and the Vietnam War (HI0011)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : HCA-3-AVW

According to one school of thought, the Vietnam War is the main turning point in modern United States history, the event that more than any other brought potential vulnerability and decline to the world's leading superpower. To study the American side of the war is therefore to develope an understanding of an important aspect of contemporary society.

The course will be concerned with American-Vietnamese relations from 1945 to 1975. It will focus on the reasons for United States involvement in and withdrawal from the war, 1964-1973. Special attention will be paid to the role of opponents of United States participation in the Vietnam war. There will be some discussion of the post-1975 historiographical debate, and the war's political, filmic and literary legacies.
