Vietnam: Nationalism and Revolution, 1862-1954 (HI0044)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : HCA-3-VNR

The Vietnamese Revolution of August 1945 represented not only one of the first national liberation wars of the post-WW2 world, but also the first accession to power of an independent communist movement since the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. This one-term course explores the background to this momentous event and the eventual defeat of French colonialism in 1954. After exploring the nature of the Vietnamese polity and society on the eve of the French occupation in the mid-nineteenth century, the course will focus on the nature of French colonial rule and its impact on Vietnamese society, the changing patterns of Vietnamese response and resistance, the history of the Vietnamese communist movement, and the impact of WW2 on Vietnam's liberation struggle. The course makes use of a growing secondary literature in English on this period in Vietnam's history (although for those who want to 'keep up' with their French there will be plenty of opportunities to make use of secondary literature in French)
