Spies, Saboteurs and Subversion: The British Intelligence Community 1909-99 (HI0141)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : HCA-3-SSS In this course we explore the growth of the twentieth century British intelligence community: mainly, the domestic security service (M.I.5.), the foreign intelligence service (M.I.6. or S.I.S.), and the signals intelligence agency (GCHQ). Through selected case studies we trace their historical development from before the First World War, through their rapid expansion during the Second World War and Cold War, to recent legislation aimed at making them more democratically accountable. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : A pass in any first level historical course and any second level historical course or equivalent. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Major themes of the course will be: the expansion of the intelligence services in twentieth century Britain and their place within Whitehall; the contribution of codebreaking and espionage to foreign policy and international relations; their role in wartime; counter-intelligence, foreign subversion, and domestic security; relations with foreign intelligence agencies such as the CIA and NSA; and issues of control and accountability and their role within a democratic state. Teaching will principally be through the seminar method with discussion based on advanced readings and documents
Assessment Information
One essay of about 3000 words (one third of overall assessment); one two-hour examination paper (two-thirds of overall assessment).
