Britain and the Falklands War (HI0172)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : HCA-3-BFW This course, which is taught over one semester, looks at selected aspects of Britain and the Falklands War. Topics covered include the British and Argentine claims on the Falkland islands; the Argentine invasion and the despatch of a British task force; the Haig mediation; the sinking of the General Belgrano; the establishment of a beachhead at San Carlos; the Battle for Stanley; the disaster at Fitzroy; the media war; and the impact of the war on British politics. There will also be an analysis of two British television dramas about the war. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : A pass in any first level historical course and any second level historical course or equivalent. It is intended that students should obtain (a) a broad knowledge of the origins, conduct and consequences of the Falklands War of 1982, with particular emphasis on the British experience (b) an insight into the range of sources from which the past is reconstructed (c) an opportunity to develop essay writing and oral skills.
Assessment Information
One essay of approx 3000 words; one two-hour examination paper.
