Archived Version

Spanish 1A (HS0001)

? Credit Points : 40  ? SCQF Level : 8  ? Acronym : LLC-1-HS0001

An intensive course of tuition in spoken and written Spanish for students with little or no previous knowledge of the language. A general introduction to the history and culture of the Hispanic world, together with the study of two appropriate texts and/or films. The course is open to students of any year, but not to students qualified for admission to Spanish 1B. The number of students admitted is strictly limited. A good deal of private study is necessary to meet the requirements of the course.

Entry Requirements

? This course is not available to visting students.

? Pre-requisites : A pass in at least one modern or classical language at Higher Grade (SCE) or at Advanced level (GCE) or evidence of linguistic proficiency.

? Prohibited combinations : Cannot be taken in conjunction with Spanish 1B

? Special Arrangements for Entry : A quota of 50 students, with preference given in the following order: (1) Students admitted to a degree programme including Spanish (Honours or BA Humanities and Social Science) Visiting Students holding a written offer of a place (2) Students taking MA (General) or BA Humanities & Social Science and intending to take a double in Spanish; students intending to take Spanish 1A and 2 as a prescribed sequence of courses within an Honours degree in another subject; (3) students making a free choice of outside subject for an Honours degree in a humanities subject with priority given to first year students. Note: If the total number of registrations exceeds 50, a ballot will be taken of category 3 students after the first meeting of the class. NB Students qualified for Spanish 1B should not be enrolled for Spanish 1A. If in doubt, consult the Division of European Languages and Cultures Teaching Office, 59 George Square.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

To provide a firm grounding in Spanish language, both written and oral, with a view to preparing potential Honours students for living and either studying or working in a Spanish-speaking country during their third year. To provide an understanding of some important literary and cultural issues relating to the countries where Spanish is spoken.

Assessment Information

1 essay (1000 words); weekly exercises and 2 class tests. Course work and class tests 40%; degree exam 60%.
