European Community Regulation of Culture and the Mass Media (LW0005)

The legal basis for European Community intervention in the cultural field. Examination of the application of the internal market and competition law principles to a variety of cultural activities, ranging from sport to television broadcasting. The formation of specific Community policies in the cultural field, focussing on Community regulation of copyright and moral rights and the audio-visual sector. Community schemes to assist cultural activities. An evaluation of Community regulatory strategies. Exploration of the influence of Community law in the development of common European cultures in, for example, the legal or political domains and through educational initiatives. The European Community's relationship with the Council of Europe and other international organisations operating in the cultural field.
