Theories of Law and Society (LY0005)

This course is concerned with the relationship between law and society as it has been understood in modern social theory. Part I of the course lays the foundation by examining in depth the place of law in the writings of classical and contemporary theorists. Part II of the course explores themes of current concern in the sociology of law by examining substantive topics. Topics for discussion may include debates surrounding the concept of the self and legal personality; concepts of contract and property; formal and informal justice; political organisation and law; law and economics.
