Law, Democracy and Citizenship (LY0013)

? Credit Points : 40  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : LAW-3-LY0013

The aim of this course is to encourage students to think critically about the relation of law and politics, the intersections and tensions between the two. The emphasis will be to explore key concepts and their inter-relationships - constitutionalism and democracy, political rights and democracy, citizenship political and social, democratic citizenship and the political economy, theories of rights - and to examine what sense we are to make of them in the context of shifts in the locus of sovreignty (EU) and political transitions (in Eastern Europe and elsewhere). There are some possible interactions or affinities (rather than overlaps) with Constitutional Law Honours and two Politics (half) courses - one on Cosmopolitan Citizenship and Global Rights and one on Discursive Democracy. These connections are viewed as being advantageous.
