Politics of Maternity Care (NS0065)

The focus is on the relationships between the various individuals and groups in the childbearing scenario as they seek to achieve the ends which are of importance to each of them. Attention will be given to the various participants in the woman's experience of childbearing. The context will comprise the variety of settings which feature in the literature on childbearing. The experience of childbearing is considered to extend from the time of decision-making, through pregnancy and birth and the postnatal period into the early days of childrearing.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- The student will consider maternity care provision in terms of its relevance to the consumer as well as the other actors.
- The role of the participants in local and international systems of maternity care will be understood.
- The extent to which maternity care addresses the various needs of those involved throughout the childbearing episode will be addressed.
