Developmental Perspectives in Physical Education (P00089)

? Credit Points : 15  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : EDU-P-P00089

Over the last 15 years significant progress has been made in our understanding of the complexinterrelated processes that underpin the physical development of school-age children. Consequently, PE programmes throughout the world are now more explicit in their aim to offer pupils experiences that are developmentally appropriate, tailored to the needs of each individual and focused on the development of a solid foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity. To enable teachers to ensure young people are put at the centre of these PE experiences, this module will help students critically evaluate this contemporary body of underpinning knowledge and directly link it to their professional experiences in the workplace.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On the completion of this module students are required to demonstrate that they are able to:

1. Evaluate the underlying reasons for the changes in movement performance that take place during the childhood and adolescent years
2. Examine the contribution that anthropometric and physiological changes make to young people's movement development
3. Appraise the role of cognitive and affective development on young people's physical education
4. Consider the socio-cultural factors influencing young people's participation in physical education
5. Work with colleagues to review the developmental appropriateness of the practice in their school.
6. On the basis of this review, plan, deliver and evaluate the impact of a 'pilot' developmentally appropriate programme.

Assessment Information

This assignment will be split into two interrelated parts. With specific reference to the PE programme in the candidate's school (s), and following discussion with colleagues, candidates will critically evaluate the developmental appropriateness of current practice in their school (s). On the basis of this evaluation, candidates will then plan, deliver and evaluate the impact of a pilot programme aimed at offering children more developmentally appropriate experiences in PE.

Each candidate will produce an assignment of 4000 words consisting of the evaluation of the existing programme, the planning of the pilot programme and its impact on the physical education experience of the children.
