The Practice of Field Archaeology in the UK (P00159)

This course is intended to provide a critical introduction to aspects of the practice of field archaeology in the 'polluter pays' world that has developed in recent decades in the UK. The course focusses on local, Scottish circumstances, although comparisons are made more widely in the UK, including with Northern Ireland. Selective comparanda will also be introduced from elsewhere, notably France, where a radically different route is being pursued, and possibly also the United States of America. The course is intended to fulfil benchmark aspirations to familiarise students with the practice of archaeology in the contemporary world.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

A sound knowledge and understanding of aspects of applied archaeological practice within the legal and other frameworks which constrain it in the modern world of resource management and competing claims on the use of land. An appreciation of the extent to which practice in this domain meshes with research frameworks and/or has to address competing pressures of e.g. heritage management and presentation.
