Acronym : HCA-P-P00167 The course aims to provide an integrated approach to the study of submerged archaeological sites, and a forum for more in-depth discussion of the subjects covered in the two Underwater Archaeology (1 and 2) courses. It covers the history and development of underwater archaeology and discusses problems of incorporating results from submerged sites into the mainstream archaeological record. Methods and techniques of underwater survey and excavation receive special emphasis. The course aims to: increase student awareness of underwater archaeology's place in the subject of archaeology as a whole; emphasise the extra dimensions which can be added to the archaeological record by an appreciation of sites underwater; broaden students' range of understanding archaeological retrieval methods; instill a realistic appreciation of the practical difficulties and problems of working underwater; make students aware of the growing development of underwater archaeology around the world.
