Theoretical Perspectives in Archaeology Part 1 (P00168)

This course covers the theoretical and philosophical background to current practice and interpretation in archaeology, focussing mainly on developments in the late 19th - 20th century. It explores the diversity of approaches within the natural and social sciences as well as humanities which, at vaious stages, contributed to theoretical and methodological debates in archaeology.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- an understanding of the philosophical and theoretical viewpoints that underpin interpretative practices in contemporary archaeology; and of the relationship between the development of archaelogy and other disciplines within the social and historical sciences.
- an ability to develop arguments and coherent lines of reasoning on theoretical and philosophical issues within the discipline.
