Underwater Archaeology Part 1 (P00186)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : HCA-P-P00186 The emphasis of this course will be on the methods and principles of Underwater Archaeology in Europe north of the Alps with particular reference to prehistoric submerged settlement sites. The course will introduce the subject of Underwater Archaeology, its evolution and development and the relationship to traditional dry land sites. It will cover issues such as legislative frameworks, problems of salvage, treasure hunters, processing organic material on submerged sites and conservation. The differences between Underwater and Wetland Archaeology will be debated and the place of Underwater Archaeology in the overall subject of Archaeology will be examined. The course aims to: increase student awareness of underwater archaeology's place in archaeology; emphasise the extra dimensions which can be added to the archaeological record by an appreciation of sites underwater; broaden students' range of understanding of archaeological retrieval methods; instill a realistic appreciation of the practical difficulties and problems of working underwater; make students aware of the growing development of underwater archaeology around the world.
