Underwater Archaeology Part 2 (P00187)

The emphasis of this course will be Underwater Archaeology around the world including shipwrecks, harbours, submerged settlements and landscapes, coastlines and rivers as gateways to hinterlands and raw materials. Ships, the development of ship construction and shipwreck excavations will be outlined with reference to examples (e.g. Mary Rose, Ulu Burun and San Juan Basque). Harbours will be examined and evidence for trade and transport, including shipwrecks and cargoes, riverine traffic and their importance for the development of major civilisations. The course will cover submerged settlement sites in the East Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Seas, changing sea levels and tectonic processes. Underwater Archaeology in the New World will also be studied.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course aims to: increase student awareness of underwater archaeology's place in archaeology; emphasise the extra dimensions which can be added to the archaeological record by an appreciation of sites underwater; broaden students' range of understanding of archaeological retrieval methods; instill a realistic appreciation of the practical difficulties and problems of working underwater; make students aware of the growing development of underwater archaeology around the world.
