Language and Identity in Bilingual Settings (P00222)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : PPL-P-LIBSLING This course is an advanced study of bilingualism as a sociolinguistic phenomenon. It focuses on macro-societal patterns of language use in bilingual communities as well as on micro-interactional language choices. It examines aspects of language shift and maintenance. And it foregrounds the importance of the notion of 'linguistic human rights' in relation to language policy and planning. Entry Requirements? At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- describe patterns of bilingual language acquisition; - describe patterns of language use in bilingual communities both synchroncally and diachronically; - describe and analyse bilingual interactional data; - demonstrate understanding of language choice acts as acts of identity; - discuss the practical implications of the above for socially significant areas of social life such as social policy.
