Research Skills and Methods (P00265)

This course offers training in basic research skills requisite for postgraduate study in the humanities. In addition to database and archival skills students will be made aware of correct referencing procedures, problems of publishing and dissemination, various methods of cultural production and analysis and basic requirements for thesis production.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will learn how to use, acquire, organise and synthesise a number of research technologies, including online resources, databases, archives, manuscripts, hypertext and unpublished documents. Students should be able to identify specific technical problems in their area of study, including problems of historical method, archival access, translation and presentation. At the end of the course students will be capable of producing a full scholarly bibliography in their area of study; they will also be competent in techniques in the management and presentation of research, including thesis preparation.

Assessment Information

Students will be asked to compile an annotated bibliography on a specific topic in their area of study. The bibliography should include a number of forms of documents, such as unpublished theses, manuscripts, online references or specific editions, and should be no more than 4000 words in length.
