History of Art Research Training (P00266)

This course is shared between students on the MSc in History, Theory and Display, and the MSc in Scottish Art and Visual Culture. It comprises a weekly, seminar co-ordinated by the programme director, with input from staff across the School of Arts, Culture and Environment. Its focus is strictly practical, and its aim is the development of useful research skills, and problem solving. Topics will normally include the following: reading and writing for research, using archives, using art objects, using interviews for research, the museum as a research tool, and the exhibition as a research tool. The assessment is a detailed research or exhibition proposal, including a preliminary bibliography, an outline structure, and an extended commentary on the research field chosen, and problems or issues that surround it.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

A practical course focused on problem solving with two principal outcomes: First, the development of a self-critical approach to the student's own research. Through discussion and writing, the student will be able to say what it is they are doing, and why. Second, the course will provide practical training in writing for research.
