Introduction to Musicology (P00303)

This course will introduce students to a range of methodologies used in musical research, particularly those traditionally used in archival research, in manuscript study and in musical iconography. The resources of the University Library, the National Library of Scotland, the National Gallery of Scotland and the National Archive of Scotland will be used, with particular focus on the 18th century, the period of the Scottish Enlightenment and the Edinburgh Musical Society.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will have become familiar with a wide range of research methodologies in historical research in music. This will inform their own research and prepare them for the writing of their dissertation.

Two 3,000-word essays.
