Postcolonial Poetry (P00353)

A post-imperial menu of poetry in forms of English designed to explore issues of dominance, subjection and resistance in terms of race, nationality and gender in the self-identifying practices of a range of poets. After a consideration of Scottish, Irish and Canadian verse, the course will focus on Caribbean and Black British poetry. The aim will be to develop interpretive strategies appropriate to the specific issues raised by the poetry.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The development of interpretative expertise in uses of language which articulate subject-positions of self-awareness and resistance; an enhanced awareness of postcolonial contexts in which issues of race, nationality and gender-formation are articulated. Increased knowledge of historical circumstances which give rise to the poetry studied and of the techniques of self-representation developed by the writers concerned.

Assessment Information

One essay of 4,000 words.
