Classroom-Based Research (P00354)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : EDU-P-CBRLING Building on work done on research methods in semester 1, participants will examine some of the instruments and methods used in classroom-related data collection: questionnaires, interview schedules, classroom observation schedules (and ethnographic alternatives), diaries, repertory grids, and stimulated introspection instruments. They will gain practical experience in using some of these methods, particularly classroom observation, to collect and analyse data and write up results. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After successful completion, participants should:
- Be familiar with a wide range of current ideas and methods in classroom-based research. - Be familiar with and able to comment on basic questions of research ideology and paradigms, including arguments for and against sociometric and illuminative research, action research and exploratory practice. - Be able to relate research issues and practices to theories and assumptions about teaching and learning. - Have basic competence in systematic classroom observation and at least one other classroom-based research method of their own choice. - Be familiar with issues of reliability, validity, ethics and practicality, and able to make principled decisions about these when designing and reporting research. Assessment Information
One project of 5000-6000 words. There will be a choice of projects involving the evaluation and/or design and/or trying out of classroom observation instruments, or the analysis of classroom-related research data (eg lesson transcripts, learner diaries.)
