Theories and Methods of Literary Study II (P00410)

This course introduces students to a number of different theories of literature and approaches to literary study, which have emerged in the 19th and 20th centuries. The approaches studied in this course include Structuralism, Post-Structuralism, Postcolonialism, and Cultural Studies. Authors whose theoretical writings will be studied include Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida and Edward Said. Each seminar will concentrate on the discussion of a reasonably short text by the theorist in question.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Familiarity with a number of literary theories and different approaches to literary study; critical reading of theoretical texts; ability to assess the range of application of theories and approaches; awareness of the relationship between approach and result; ability to reflect on aesthetic principles and their historical change within different contexts; further development of communication, presentation and writing skills.
