The course will examine the development of urban planning beginning with the first urban societies in the Near East, from the 4th millennium B.C. continuing through the 7th century A.D. Emphasis will be placed on the urban architectural traditions of the great Near Eastern imperial polities, in conjunction with the ideological, political, and geographical contexts in which the cities arose, flourished and declined.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Theoretical Understanding: a basic knowledge of the development of urban planning in the Near East, treatment of different theoretical approaches to urban planning. In addition this will provide the foundation for an understanding of classes that analyse the origins of the empires and urbanism in the Near East.
Practical and Professional Skills. provide the opportunity for analysing various of theoretical approaches to a subject and critically evaluating them.
Transferable Skills: the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and their interpretation.
