Portfolio of Written Translation Exercises 1 and 2 (P00457)? Credit Points : 40 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : LLC-P-P00457 Students will be supervised in practical translation exercises. Selection of texts is decided by mutual agreement between the student and the translation tutor. The following languages are currently available for the practical translation component: Arabic, Chinese, Danish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish. There is also a 'Hispanic Languages' option (which includes Spanish, and may, subject to availability, include Portuguese and/or Catalan). The students are advised to contact in advance for the availability of the particular language combinations in any given year. The direction of translation for the practical translation exercises is at the discretion of the practical translation tutor. The most common practice is to receive training in translation into English, but in some cases both directions, i.e. from and into English, are available. The courses will offer the students plenty of opportunity to imporve their translation knowledge and understanding by compiling a portfolio of translations on various text types.
The most important professional skill gained through the course will be learning to produce professionally prepared translations. Assessment Information
Assessed by a portfolio of translations, and a supervised translation test at the end of each semester (500 words and 2 hours each). In each semester the portfolio consists of 1000 words assessed translations and 1500 words unassessed translations (altogether 5000 words). The two translation tests will account to 50% of the overall course mark.
