Research Methods in Film Studies (P00466)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : LLC-P-P00466 This course provides an advanced introduction to research issues specific to the study of film. Theories and methods, including semiotics, historical and formalist approaches, are introduced at a general level. Seminars will also examine particular instances of each type of method of analysis of film. The course begins with an explanation of research proposals and structures before moving on to different and competing approaches to contemporary film studies. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to formulate a research problem and will be aware of the appropriate methods for dealing with different modes of research in cinema studies. Students will not only be competent in the preparation of bibliographies and research documents; they will also be capable of identifying and articulating possible research projects in film studies.
Assessment Information
Students will be asked to formulate a statement of a research topic, including the aims, objectives, methods and significance of the proposed research. They will also be required to write an overview and summary of recent research relevant to their identified topic. The statement and literature overview should not exceed 4,000 words.
