Elementary Latin (PG) 1 (P00488)

An introduction to the Latin language for complete beginners and those with limited recent experience of the language. In classes shared with the undergraduate course Latin 1A (U02623) a thorough grounding is provided in the essentials of Latin accidence (nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs) and in the syntax of the simple sentence. From week 3 post-graduates also have a weekly class to read selected texts, classical and/or medieval as appropriate.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the course successfully will be able by the end of the course to demonstrate in written examination and course work (including weekly quizzes and tutorial exercises)that they:
- have mastered the accidence of the Latin language;
- have an understanding of the basics of Latin syntax (simple sentences);
- are able to translate straightforward Latin sentences with the help of a dictionary.

Assessment Information

A series of linguistic exercises (40%);
an end of semester class test in grammar and in translation into English (60%).
