Elementary Latin (PG) 2 (P00489)

Consolidation of work in Latin accidence and grammar from Elementary Latin (PG) 1, together with systematic treatment of the syntax of the complex sentence. In classes shared with the undergraduate course Latin 1B (U02624), a thorough grounding is provided in the syntax of subordinate clauses and of indirect speech. The second half of the semester is taken up with the reading of a simple text.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the course successfully will be able by the end of the course to demonstrate in written examination and course work (including weekly quizzes and tutorial exercises)that they:
- have consolidated their grasp of the accidence of the Latin language and acquired a basic working vocabulary;
- have an understanding of the syntax of the Latin sentence, simple and complex;
- are able to translate narrative Latin prose with the help of a dictionary;
- are able to apply their linguistic training to reading other kinds of writing (e.g. lyric and elegiac verse).

Assessment Information

A series of linguistic exercises (40%);
an end of semester class test in grammar and in translation into English (60%).
