Dissertation (MSc/Dip Advanced Social Work Studies in Criminal Justice) (P00515)

This course is designed for experienced professionally qualified social workers that work in the criminal justice system. It provides students with the opportunity to conduct a small-scale work based research study employing skills from Module 4. This will form the basis for their dissertation.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Learning Objectives:

1. To be able to identify a suitable topic for theoretical exploration or within which a research project can be developed through all its stages, from the initial identification of a problem to the final report.

2. To collect and categorise information, analyse ideas and concepts, and link them to the research and/or social work theory and practice.

3. To present material in an orderly and organised way.

Learning Outcomes:

This module demands that participants demonstrate their ability to implement a research plan making a significant contribution to the development, delivery and evaluation of policy or practice within criminal justice social work. This will include:

- negotiating with organisations to identify service needs

- planning and designing a research study

- gathering and analysing data using information technology where appropriate

- disseminating findings.

Assessment Information

Assessment for this course will be a 15,000 word research based dissertation
