Developing Communication for Children with Severe/Profound and Complex Learning Difficulties (P00556)

The module forms part of the PG Diploma and Masters degree in Education Support (Inclusive and Special Education). It builds on the knowledge and understanding developed in the core modules of the programme and extends these into the specialised and demanding areas of pupils who have exceptional physical and intellectual impairments. It articulates with the specialised modules Meeting the needs of autistic learners and A special curriculum for pupils with severe and complex learning difficulties.

Through knowledge of research on the development of language and communication, consideration of a range of specialised assessment techniques, and through collaborative work with parents, and speech therapists.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Course members will apply their knowledge of the development of communication in educational contexts.
They will develop skills in assessment and observation.
They will be able to implement a range of effective facilitating activities to enhance the communication and independence of their pupils.
They will work effectively with parents and with colleagues from other disciplines, in particular with speech and language therapists.

Assessment Information

A 5000 word report on the development of a short programme to enhance communication in one pupil who has severe difficulties in communication.
