Meeting the Needs of Autistic Learners (P00559)

The module is designed to help educators and carers to meet the intellectual and emotional challenges posed by this vulnerable and demanding group of pupils who have a wide range of intellectual ability including those with Asperger's Syndrome. Course members are expected to work with a pupil on the autistic spectrum as an integral component of this module.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Course members will:
- develop enhanced understanding through research findings, reading and discussion.
- apply this understanding to developing learning approaches, curricula and contexts that would be helpful to learners with autism.
- use appropriate observation, assessment and liaison with others on which to base programme planning, and plan appropriate means of evaluating their success.
- understand the importance of inter-professional collaboration and of working in partnership with families.

Assessment Information

Drawing on your learning from the module (reading of research and literature, formal in-put and discussions) describe how you would make the provision in which you are working, and your own practices, more effective for the autistic learners with whom you work (5,000 words).
