Social, Cultural, and Political Environments in Sport Management (P00563)

This course offers an overview of the economic, political and social environment within which sport and recreation has developed. Focussing on the past twenty years in particular, the course examines the development of the sport and recreation business in the midst of globalisation. The course will consider such topics as social class and social mobility, consumerism, citizenship and social diversity and the place of sport and recreation in modern lifestyles. The main objective of the course is to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of the various forces and actors that operate on sport and recreation in contemporary societies.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students will be able to:
1. demonstrate an awareness of the economic, political and social forces affecting sport and recreation.
2. discuss and analyse case studies of different forms of sport and recreation
3. identify and evaluate appropriate material for researching the sport and recreation business environment
4. demonstrate awareness of current research developments in the study of the sport and recreation business environment

Assessment Information

Each participant will produce an assignment of no more than 4,000 words.
