The child's pathway from home perhaps through day care, to the early years classroom will be traced, building on course members' existing knowledge of early childhood development. Adults - parents, day-carers, nursery staff and school teachers - all create various contexts for children's development, taking into account the implications in child care for cultural diversity. It is, however, for the children that transition between these contexts could pose a challenge. The contexts are themselves constrained by (local) government and by economic factors: these macrosystems will be taken into account. Group discussion of the many issues arising will draw on research evidence and on the experience of course members.
