Theory, Policy and Practice in Early Childhood (P00628)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : EDU-P-P00628 The purpose of this module is to provide an opportunity to analyse the key issues which, at a time of major social and political change challenge all services for, and all educators of young children. It takes abroad perspective but one which will emphasise the complexity and inter-relatedness of the issues. The main thrust of the module is to develop the process of critical reflection on the education of young children, the nature of socio-cultural contexts and quality of provision. Integral to that is that course members will consider their own professional practice. This module will explore the implications for policy and practice which are arising from current research findings. On completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. critically review issues of curriculum and assessment in the early years 2. demonstrate an awareness of care and education in diverse communities and develop an understanding of the issues of quality, continuity and progression 3. develop an in-depth understanding of the inter-relationship between theory and practice 4. demonstrate an awareness of the issues of policy, provision and practice for young children in Scotland considered in the context of national and international theory and action research 5. demonstrate an awareness of pedagogical approaches both in theory and practice Assessment Information
The module assessment will take the form of a written assignment (5,000 words). This will consist of a report of a selected area of policy in early education and a critical analysis of its relationship to research and associated literature. The report should demonstrate an reflection of the course member's current provision and practice and identify how they might implement and evaluate an aspect of policy.
