Palliative Care: Psychological, Social and Spiritual Needs (P00635)

To explore the principles of a therapeutic relationship and to develop citical awareness of psychological, social and spiritual issues and initiate appropriate intervention for the individuals, and their families, with a life limiting illness.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : M.Sc Option. Passes in Research and Evaluation in Health Care; Issues and Trends in Nursing and Health Care. Run by University of Glasgow.

? Costs : Glasgow University matriculation fee and travel costs

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Evaluate assessment tools for psychological, social and spiritual needs for those experiencing life limiting illness and of those of their family.
Critically appraise different coping strategies and facilitate adaptation in the clinical setting.
Appraise appropriate strategies and interventions to relieve distress and evaluate the outcome.
Analyse the concept of suffering, hope, rehabilitation and survivorship.
Analyse the concept and impact of loss on individuals and their families.

Assessment Information

Formative: The student will submit and audiotaped communication scenario for the purpose of exploring the psychological status of the patient or carer.
Summative: The student will write a critical reflection in relation to meeting the social, psychological and spirititual needs of the patient or carer with whom they have been involved. They should identifiy one significant issue and from a theoretical perspective, and with reference to relevant literatue, discuss the imprortance of this issue for the individual person.
