The Ethnography Seminar (P00661)

This course focuses on ethnography both as 'process' and 'product'. Through readings and assignments, it helps students explore: the historical development of ethnography in the Anglophone world; a variety of 'classic' ethnographies; the ways in which text and theory are linked; and some individual ethnographers.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be expected to demonstrate:
- an understanding of ethnographic fieldwork as a process and its links to writing ethnography as product
- an ability to read critically academic literature on ethnography
- an ability to read ethnographic material and grasp how they have been 'put together'
- an understanding of how ethnographic writing might be evaluated

Assessment Information

(i) 1 long essay (4000 words) worth 80% of the available marks
(ii) 1 short written assignment (max. 1500 words) worth 20% of the available marks
