Issues in Employment Policies (P00670)

This course attempts to take an international comparative perspective to questions of employment and employment policies. It will seek to identify varieties in patterns of employment and problems for welfare to which they give rise. Unemployment and poverty in international perspective. Macroeconomic policy. The deregulation strategy. Welfare states - impact on employment. 'Welfare to work' policies. Education and skills policies. Wages policies. 'Equal opportunities' in employment.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The student is expected to show
- An understanding of economic and social theories in relation to employment.
- An ability to read critically academic literature on employment.
- An ability to take an international comparative perspective on employment.
- An ability to read data on employment with understanding as to how it is compiled.
- An understanding of how employment policies might be evaluated.
