Sources for Scottish Studies (P00671)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : HCA-P-SSS Students will be given a phased introduction to the sources and archives and as well as an introduction to research methodology, training and practice with opportunities to experience at first hand a variety of source materials. There will be visits to the various archival repositories, and students will be instructed in the use of bibliographies and references, essay writing skills, on-line web-based resources and as well as use of the source material. The students will also be given guidance on writing for and giving seminar papers. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : Admission is open to students with a good honours degree or equivalent in a relevant area of the Arts or Social Sciences or related field. ? Co-requisites : Scottish Studies Archival Internships A and B (P00673,P00877) and the Interdisciplinary seminar series in Scottish Studies P00672. Students will have to complete the core elements of the degree (Sources for Scottish Studies, Interdisciplinary seminar series in Scottish Studies and two archival internships) and also one 40-credit, or two 20-credit, background course(s) available from subject areas within the collaborating schools. A final dissertation is also required for students who progress to the MSc. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will be introduced to interdisciplinary approaches to culture and historiography. They will be introduced to theory and methodology and will acquire some generic and some specific training in skills. They will learn how to use, acquire, organise and synthesise a number of sources for research and study for the history, culture and ethnology of Scotland including on-line material, libraries and archives. They will be introduced to a variety of primary source material included manuscript or other written materials, visual material (photographs), material culture, oral sources (oral testimony or songs) and literary material (songs, poetry and traditional narrative tales). Students will learn to identify research material suitable for their selected internship and area of special interest. They will learn to identify and how to address problems encountered in research: methodology, archival resources and restrictions, source limitations, transcription and analysis. They will expected to be able to manage their research, maintain their bibliography and present their research.
Assessment Information
The students will be required to pass a written source analysis and review, normally 4000 words in length, in which they discuss the range of source(s) available for a chosen research project. This will include discussion of some or all of the following: primary written or printed sources, oral, visual, material objects and on-line material as well as any relevant secondary material. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the nature of the sources, their purpose, their reliability or bias (if applicable) and their application and use in current research.
