An introduction to issues in the analysis of structure in written texts; basic aspects of cohesion and coherence in written texts; a critical account of approaches based on the analysis of cohesion as a stable and supra-sentential feature of written text; a dynamic view of the establishment of concepts and relations in written text; the problematic nature of coherence and its analysis; a directed programme of reading.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will
- have a basic grasp of the development of discourse and text analysis in linguistics
- have developed an understanding of relevant approaches to the analysis of written text
- have come to an understanding of the status of sentence and paragraph, and of the role of punctuation, in written text
- have an understanding of (i)the anlysis of cohesion and coherence, (ii) the problematic nature of the latter, and (iii) its key significance
- have focussed on the linguistic characteristics of factual/expository text

Assessment Information

Formative/Summative - one extended piece of written work (c. 2,500 words), involving analysis of a eice or pieces of written factual/expository text, submitted at the end of the course.
