Old English Dialectology (P00790)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : PPL-P-OEDEL A detailed exploration and assessment of the orthographic variation evidenced in a variety of written records of Old English (editions of manuscripts, manuscript facsimilies, runic inscriptions, and name spellings on coins), and its significance with regard to the reconstruction of regional phonological systems and the identification of traditionally-defined major 'diagnostic' features of the dialects of Old English. This is combined with critical re-evalutation of the import of Old English orthography and of the application and suitability of the term 'dialectology' to Old English. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course students will have acquired detailed knowledge and understanding of:
- the aims and methodologies of possible approaches to the study of regional variation in Old English - textual and source materials for the historical reconstruction of the linguistic systems of varieties of Old English - what are regarded as the major phonological and morphological differences between the traditionally-defined dialects of Old English - the linguistic and non-linguistic information necessary for linguistic interpretation of the various types of written records of Old English - a range of linguistics interpretations of Old English orthographic variation Students will have acquired detailed knowledge and understanding of the critical judgement and skills enabling them to interpret, analyse and evaulate Old English orthographic data (from a synchronic or diachronic viewpoint) drawn from a variety of sources, whether roman-letter ~palaeography based or roman-letter/rune~ epigraphy' based; offer critical evaluation of a variety of linguistic interpretations of this data and of possible approaches to Old English 'dialectology' Assessment Information
