A detailed exploration and assessment of the orthographic variation evidenced in a variety of written records of Old English (editions of manuscripts, manuscript facsimilies, runic inscriptions, and name spellings on coins), and its significance with regard to the reconstruction of regional phonological systems and the identification of traditionally-defined major 'diagnostic' features of the dialects of Old English.
