Underwater Archaeology Practice (P00816)

This course will be carried out during one week on location at the Crannog Centre on Loch Tay during the second semester and will cover a number of issues raised in the classroom in the Underwater Archaeology Part 1 and Part 2 courses. They will include Risk Assessments and Codes of Practice, personal equipment, surface demand and excavation equipment, survey and excavation techniques, recording archaeological data underwater, conservation and preliminary material analysis. Fieldwork and diving will be under the auspices of the Scottish Trust for Underwater Archaeology, an HSE registered diving contractor, based at the University of Edinburgh.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course aims to: increase student awareness of underwater archaeology's place in the subject of archaeology as a whole; emphasise the extra dimensions which can be added to the archaeological record by an appreciation of sites underwater; broaden students' range of understanding of archaeological retrieval methods; instill a realistic appreciation of the practical difficulties and problems of working underwater; make students aware of the growing development of underwater archaeology around the world
