Scottish Emigration, 1700-1939 (P00820)

This course will present students with the opportunity to study the expanding amount of published research on Scottish emigration, to which the course organiser has contributed. This will include government intervention in Scotland to prevent emigration, assisted emigration, patterns of emigration from Scotland and the effect of a tradition of emigration on the development of Scottish society in modern times.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course is designed to build on the skills introduced in its prerequisite course, British Emigration 1603-1914, during the first semester. There will be increased emphasis on independent research and seminar presentation. Students will be encouraged to take a proactive role in seminars and to develop their own interests within the general structure of the course, building the confidence and self reliance necessary to increase depth of research and analysis.
