Management Development 1: Personal Effectiveness and Learning Technology (P00997)

This course will present and critically analyse previous, current and new approaches to management development and management thinking with a special focus on personal and individual skills as well as team-working. An understanding of different forms of management knowledge - codified versus tacit, and substantive knowledge versus skills - is developed. Students will work with a number of globally relevant management techniques to learn how these can support the daily management process, and how the choice of approach can affect an organisation. This course will also teach students to work with the technology supporting the programme, and develop a high level of competence and confidence. The residential aspect of the course is designed to build a strong cohort identity as a basis for future team working and mutual support.

? Additional Class Information : One Residential week with approximately 20 hours lectures/seminars and 30 hours tutorial and structured activities including team work. Follow-up e-learning over 9 weeks.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course the students should be able to:
- Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge about Individual and team-working issues as well as team management techniques.
- Display an understanding of the different forms of knowledge, such as codified versus tacit.
- Demonstrate that they can apply and adapt the presented subjects, skills and techniques to a current situation or problem.
- Be able to choose appropriate techniques to support their daily work as managers.
- Be competent and confident in using the technology associated with studying on the GMBA programme.

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed through a combination of three group work assignments each accounting for 20% of the total mark and an individual essay accounting for 40% of the final mark.
