Organising for Innovation (P01004)

The course aims to establish the applicable vocabulary and principles of entrepreneurship, innovation, dynamic markets and new venture creation. The course provides an appreciation of the current state of the art in how to organise for innovation and seeks to addresses the challenges and opportunities facing those creating, commercialising and supporting innovations. A process framework for innovation commercialisation, from the origin of the innovation to its introduction into the marketplace, will be presented and key criteria used in markets - and by market players - for assessing, supporting and investing in new innovations will be developed

? Pre-requisites : Normally participation in Management Development 1: Personal Effectiveness and Learning Technology

? Costs : Most costs are included in the programme fee, though some communication costs will be borne by the students

? Additional Class Information : e-course with 8hrs streamed lectures, 4hrs Question & Answer sessions, 10hrs moderated tutorials/discussions, 12hrs structured activities, 16hrs multi media instruction; and 50hrs individual study, including assignments

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course the students should be able to:
- display a knowledge 'tool-kit' for identifying the resource and capability requirements for transforming innovation ideas into market value
- realistically assess opportunity viability and exit strategies
- demonstrate an understanding of the evolutionary processes of innovator, entrepreneur and manager in relation to the evolution of the commercialisation processes and stages of new venture development
- demonstrate that they can apply or adapt the presented subjects, skills and techniques to create and defend a compelling business plan that will be subject to both academic and practitioner review and challenge

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed through on individual paper (30%), one group project, including an electronic log of progress (50%) and one course quiz (20%)
