Managing Innovation in Complex Products and Systems (P01006)

The course aims to present models of innovation in Complex Products and Systems and more explicit theoretical and empirical differences between the dynamics in innovation in CoPS compared with other products, e.g. commodity goods. An understanding of how innovation, industrial organisation, firm strategies and management in CoPS differ from the 'conventional' model of innovation related to the mass production of consumer goods is provided. In addition, how firms are responding to changes in the environment and building capabilities to create and exploit new market for 'integrated' solutions are explored

? Pre-requisites : Normally participation in Management Development 1: Personal Effectiveness and Learning Technology

? Costs : Most costs are included in the programme fee, though some communication costs will be borne by the students

? Additional Class Information : e-course with 6hrs streamed lectures, 4hrs Question & Answer sessions, 10 hrs moderated tutorials/discussions, 20hrs structured activities, 20hrs multi media instruction; and 40hrs individual study, including assignments

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course the students should be able to:
- display and understanding of key concepts and approaches concerned with the Management of Innovation in CoPS
- explain how the management of Innovation in CoPS differ from 'conventional' models of innovation
- analyse and critically assess different approaches to the Management of Innovation in CoPS
- demonstrate that they can apply or adapt the presented subjects, skills and techniques to a particular situation

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed through an individual essay (30%), an individual project, including an electronic log of progress (40%) and a group project, including an electronic log of progress (30%)
