Strategic Management (P01022)

The course aims to provide an integrated and coherent introduction to modern Strategic Management and to emphasise the generalist nature of management work. In this, the role of top management in setting the direction of enterprise is examined and techniques of strategic analysis are assessed. Through this an understanding of processes of strategy formulation and implementation is provided and an appreciation of the relationship between Strategic Management and other management functions in an organisation is developed

? Pre-requisites : Normally participation in Management Development 1: Personal Effectiveness and Learning Technology

? Costs : Most costs are included in the programme fee, though some communication costs will be borne by the students

? Additional Class Information : e-course with 6hrs streamed lectures; 4hrs Question & Answer sessions; 15hrs moderated tutorials/discussions; 15hrs structured activities; 20hrs multi media instruction; and 40hrs individual study, including assignments

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course the students should be able to:
- appreciate the holistic approach to the analysis of strategy
- demonstrate that they can apply or adapt the presented subjects, skills and techniques to a particular situation, suggesting possible improvements
- identify the main drivers of strategic change in an organisation
- demonstrate an understanding of approaches to the implementation of strategic change processes
- exhibit particular corporate level knowledge of diversification, acquisitions and the management of a group handling a variety of business units
- organise teamwork including presentation and report writing

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed through one individual assignment accounting for 25%, one individual briefing paper 25%, and one group project, including an electronic log of progress 50%
