Technology Assessment and Economic Appraisal (P01023)

The course aims to underline the complexity of technological decisions and to provide an understanding of Technology Assessment (TA) and the role of Economic Appraisal (EA) in this. The course will present and critically assess key aspects of TA and EA through the proposal of a conceptual model. Students will be introduced to different approaches and techniques relevant to TA and EA and an understanding of the social and environmental aspects of Technology Assessment will be developed

? Pre-requisites : Normally participation in Management Development 1: Personal Effectiveness and Learning Technology

? Costs : Most costs are included in the programme fee, though some communication costs will be borne by the students

? Additional Class Information : e-course with 6hrs streamed lectures, 4hrs Question & Answer sessions, 15hrs moderated tutorials/discussions, 15hrs structured activities, 20hrs multi media instruction; and 40hrs individual study, including assignments

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course the students should be able to:
- display an understanding of the practical considerations in technology-related decision making
- demonstrate an awareness of methods used in Technology Assessment and an understanding of the practical approaches proposed in the course
- perform Technology Assessment and Economic Appraisal by effectively combining the outcomes from the different approaches to assessment to draw the bigger picture
- display an understanding of the social and environmental considerations of technology-related decision making

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed through one group work assignments accounting for 30% of the total mark and, one briefing report (individual or team work) accounting for 20%, and one individual project, including an electronic log of progress, accounting for 50% of the total mark
