Business in the Global Economy (P01024)

With a focus on Business conditions in the Global Economy the course aims to familiarise students with the impact of globalisation on their work as managers. Through focus on how the global economy functions vis-`-vis business students will be introduced to the complexities facing companies when operating and innovating in the global environment. Techniques relevant to analysing tensions that often appear among firms and among firms and authority (e.g. governments and international organizations) with regard to technology will be presented thus honing the ability to critically assess key aspects regarding the business innovation in a changing global political economy

? Pre-requisites : Normally participation in Management Development 1: Personal Effectiveness and Learning Technology

? Costs : Most costs are included in the programme fee, though some communication costs will be borne by the students

? Additional Class Information : e-course with: 6hrs streamed lectures, 4hrs Question & Answer sessions, 15hrs moderated tutorials/discussions, 20hrs structured activities, 20hrs multi media instruction; and 35hrs individual study, including assignments

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course the students should be able to:
- analyse and understand complex business activity relative to the global environment
- identify potential difficulties facing global businesses in an innovation-oriented environment
- display an understanding of key frameworks used in analyzing high technology businesses operating in the global environment
- demonstrate that they can apply or adapt the presented subjects, skills and techniques to a particular situation and suggest possible improvements

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed through two group work assignments, each accounting for 25% of the total mark and one individual project, including an electronic log of progress, accounting for 50% of the total mark
