Colonialism, Nationalism & Post-Colonialsm in South Asia (P01054)

This course will be team-taught and will engage critically with some of the theoretical and empirical debates surrounding the questions of nationalism, colonialism and post-colonialism in South Asia. The course will aim to cover the diversity of experience, theory and approaches to nationalism across South Asia, drawing on examples from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Himalayan Kingdoms. Whilst topics and areas may vary from year to year the course will revolve around questions of colonial and post-colonial identity and it will highlight the continuities and specificities of manifestations of nationalism in South Asia.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Knowledge of the main theoretical approaches to the study of nationalism and its links to wider social and political change in South Asia;
- Awareness of the interplay between social and political institutions, modes of transition and ideological imperatives in shaping nationalist enterprises;
- Competence in analysing nationalisms and their impact from a sociological perspective; Skills in team-based investigation, planning and reporting on current issues
